Choosing General Contractor

Make Sure the Contractor is Licensed, Insured, and Qualified

First and foremost, you’ll want to make sure your general contractor is insured, licensed, and qualified for the job you are hiring them for. If a contractor isn’t insured and a worker gets hurt while completing work for you, you could be liable. Additionally, if there is damage caused to your neighbor’s property by workers or equipment from your project, you would want the contractor to cover the cost of that damage and not have to worry about paying for someone else’s mistake.

Don’t Decide Based on Price

Everyone loves saving money, so it is common practice to always go with the cheapest option, even when it comes to contractors. While this may be okay at the supermarket, it may not be the best idea when it comes to picking your contractor. What most people don’t realize is that sometimes a lower cost can mean cheaper materials, inexperienced workers, or even cut corners. It is important to do your research and not let the price guide you. Remember, you want the work to last, so quality is worth the few extra dollars.

Check Work Samples

Samples allow you to see a contractor’s work quality as well as the type of projects they have experience with. Not only can this help you feel comfortable with how the work will turn out, but it can also spark ideas for your own project.

At the end of the day, choosing general contractor can be the most important part of your entire project. It is important that you are working with a contractor you are comfortable with. You should feel comfortable asking questions and giving feedback. And you should constantly be aware of the project status, and you should have clear expectations.
