Renovation Mistakes & How to Avoid Them

Measuring Incorrectly

Measuring incorrectly can be one of the most frustrating mistakes during a renovation. While some people try to avoid labor costs by measuring and picking up materials on their own, it’s difficult to know exactly what you have to take into consideration without the proper experience. Incorrect measurements could mean that you don’t have enough room to install your appliances, or that you don’t have enough material, even if it’s only off by half an inch. If you’re installing flooring, incorrect measurements could mean that halfway through the job, you’ll have to start over because your pieces won’t fit. To avoid measurement mistakes and unnecessary frustration, it’s a good idea to leave the entire job to your contractor.

Focusing Only on Appearances

We’re all excited to see how our project will look when we’re done, and we always aim for fresh and new. The one thing you need to keep in mind however is to make sure that you don’t focus solely on appearance. If a major repair needs to be done, do it, even if it takes up most of your budget. While you may no longer be able to get the tile you were dreaming of, you’ll be preventing future problems that may cost you more than you can afford. From a different perspective, focusing on appearances could mean that you are sacrificing quality if you’re purchasing something solely based on the physical appearance, and not the actual quality of the product.

Choosing the Wrong Type of Paint

Believe it or not, choosing the type of paint is just as important as choosing the color of your paint. Paint manufacturers make different types of paint for every area in your house and they all act a bit different and make a huge difference once they’re on your walls. While gloss and semi-gloss paints have a nice shine and will look great in high traffic areas, like kitchens and hallways, flat paint won’t has as nice of an effect. Flat paint tends to show marks and in most cases, is not very easy to clean. If your walls have imperfections, they’ll be much more noticeable with flat paint and you may end up disappointed. Make sure you put some research into the type of paint you’re buying, so you don’t end up having to redo a brand new paint job.
